How Millennials have changed divorce

by | Feb 6, 2020 | Divorce

Though many often feel otherwise, divorce is a common event in modern life. Many people claim that 50% of all marriages end in divorce. However, that statistic is not accurate. What is accurate is that the divorce rate reached its highest point in 1979 with 5.3 divorces per 1,000 people. It’s fallen ever since then, with the 2017 divorce rate standing at 2.9 divorces per 1,000 people.

Some experts say that part of the reason for this trend may be due to a drop in divorces among Millennials. Though some try to explain that theory away, others insist that these lower rates will continue. They also point out that, when Millennials actually do get divorced, they handle the entire process much differently. If you are part of this demographic here in Indiana, it may interest you to learn just how Millennials may have changed divorce.

The percentages of “I do” and “I don’t anymore”

One researcher claims that, from 2008 to 2016, the rate of divorce fell by 18%. Though some say that is due to plummeting marriage rates among Millennials, the same researcher says he believes this will go on. He even went so far as to suggest that, when people enter their 40s, if they are still married, their chance of divorce drops significantly.

Divorce is different nowadays

Even considering these falling rates, it isn’t unheard of for Millennials to get a divorce. When it happens, divorce professionals report that many of the circumstances have changed compared to older generations, mostly financially. Millennials seem more willing to sign prenuptial agreements, as both of them have assets to bring into the union. That also means that this demographic is more likely to marry for love instead of to secure their future.

Technology has also changed divorce. Younger generations seem more likely to make use of technology that can help them through the divorce process. Professionals say that younger people have faster and easier access to financial documents through websites and apps. Even the actual process of divorce is easier with Millennial-friendly technology.

Social changes to divorce

Though many older adults often feel a sense of shame for getting divorced, that isn’t the case for Millennials. Divorce is so commonplace that young people feel less pressure to stay in an unhappy marriage. The rise of dating apps also makes divorce a bit more palatable. Young people may be more likely to see that they have other options for romantic partners after divorce and thus are more comfortable with the prospect overall.

Whatever a person’s reason for divorce, it can happen to anyone of any age. If you’re considering untying the knot, there are several different professionals that can assist you with the process. They can help you feel more secure about your future as you embark on your new life.
